About the role:
We are looking for a highly skilled and innovative Senior Quality Engineer to join our Posit Connect engineering team. Posit Connect delivers value to businesses by empowering data scientists to rapidly deploy custom reports and applications. These artifacts, written in Python, R, Quarto, and more, allow data scientists to tell stories with data and solve real-world problems. Connect solves the challenges of putting code into production, such as environment management and authentication, without requiring constant intervention from administrators.
This role involves test automation infrastructure creation and maintenance, automated test strategy creation, and full-stack automated testing, in collaboration with the team. Quality is owned by everyone on the team, so developers and quality engineers work closely to ensure we are producing software with high value and quality, and building reliable CI infrastructure and internal tools to ensure high quality and facilitate development. This role offers a significant opportunity to drive the quality of our software through building, expanding, and maintaining our automated test infrastructure. We value analysis, empathy, and critical thought on the team, and you will be expected to contribute to collaborative product and development discussions throughout the development process.
Internally, this role is titled "Senior QA Engineer".
What you’ll own:
- Create, maintain, and enhance our automated test infrastructure, making automated tests easier to author, faster to run, more resilient, and broader in coverage. Depending on the project, these automated tests could be end-to-end, integration, API, or load and performance.
- Develop infrastructure as code to deploy reproducible test environments in AWS, Kubernetes, docker, GitHub actions, etc.
- Expand our performance testing using internal and external tools and infrastructure.
What you’ll help with:
- Maintain and improve our existing test infrastructure and testing frameworks.
- Develop a strategy for future CI infrastructure and automated tests.
- Collaborate with other QA Engineers to coordinate test coverage, assess risk holistically, and mentor others in areas where you have expertise.
- Work closely with Engineering leadership to ensure we have the correct process and strategy for our day to day work.
- Partner with developers and Customer Support to investigate customer-reported issues, ensuring a smooth user experience and contributing to continuous product improvement.
What you’ll teach:
- Test automation best practices across all of our code, with a critical eye towards infrastructure and build systems. This role isn't just about writing great tests; it's about designing and implementing solutions that ensure our builds remain fast and efficient even as our testing efforts expand.
- A quality mindset across the team. Everyone on the team owns quality, but quality engineers are champions for broad and pragmatic automated test coverage, quick and reliable CI that unblocks the team quickly, and implements and maintains measures of non-functional performance.
- Industry trends and new technologies related to CI, testing, and automation.
- Build and maintain test setups that can grow with our software, but are pragmatically scaled for our current problems. Creating test infrastructure that lasts, is easy to update, and runs efficiently, even as things get more complex without being overengineered.
What you’ll learn:
- How to develop and maintain software effectively within a data science context, including best practices, tools, and patterns common in the field.
- A deep understanding of Posit Connect, publishing tools and plugins, and the test environments required to ensure software quality.
- Broad domain expertise across Posit products by collaborating closely with other teams.
You have:
- Expertise in building test automation infrastructure and creating automated tests at scale.
- Experience writing automated tests in Cypress or in Python.
- Curiosity and a willingness to learn new technologies.
- A humble, collaborative approach to producing high-quality software.
- Desire to help colleagues and those on other teams, and work with them frequently in a highly collaborative environment.
- A drive to architect and implement comprehensive, yet pragmatic, test strategies to cover functionality across many different systems, knowing what to prioritize and how to assess and communicate the tradeoffs.
