We’re searching for a Staff Photonics Packaging Engineer based in Mountain View, California. 

This individual is mainly responsible for development of Packaging Technologies used in the Aurora Driver. The candidate for this position must possess at least 5 years of experience in photonics packaging technology/project development or a closely related field, in order to be able to integrate rapidly into the demands of our business. 

In this role, you will

  • Work on the development and design of subassemblies for lidar sensors that involve silicon photonics, III-V photonics and micro-optical components to meet performance, power, reliability, manufacturability and cost targets
  • Develop and optimize micro-optical assembly processes for high-precision optical components. Design and implement assembly workflows, including precision alignment, bonding, and packaging.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including optical designers, mechanical engineers, thermal engineers, and manufacturing specialists, to ensure seamless integration of optical components.
  • Conduct experiments to evaluate process capabilities and identify areas for improvement. Utilize metrology tools to measure and analyze optical component performance and alignment accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot assembly process issues and implement corrective actions to ensure high yield and reliability.
  • Document process development activities, create standard operating procedures (SOPs), and train production staff on new assembly techniques.
  • Design and optimize sub-assemblies for light emitting devices, such as high power diode lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers
  • Design and validate necessary tooling for optical packaging and testing 
  • Support thermo-mechanical modeling of customized photonic packages with various levels of integration to maximize cooling and minimize thermo-mechanical stress. 
  • Support reliability testing of photonic subassemblies throughout the development phases of the product
  • Work with NPI and production to support product transfer into production. 

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. / M.S. in Optics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field + >5 years of industry experience, preference for Senior/Staff level experience
  • Experienced with optical assembly and testing in production environment
  • Experience with photonic integrated circuits
  • Experience with micro-optics package development
  • Experience with opto-electronic package design
  • Experience with mechanical design and prototypingWell organized, detail oriented self starter in a complex environment

Desirable Qualifications 

  • Ph. D in Optics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field 
  • Experience with NPI and contract manufacturing
  • Experience with optics design and simulation
  • Experience with optical module reliability qualification
  • Experience with lidar, radar or general sensor tech background

The base salary range for this position is $181,000 - $290,000 per year.  Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
