Senior Engineering Manager, Ingestion

At PagerDuty, we believe that people do their best in a culture that fosters inclusion, innovation, and success. Our values - Champion the Customer, Take the Lead, Run Together, Ack + Own and Bring Yourself - serve as the foundation of our collaborative and dynamic culture. Whether it’s conducting a retrospective, participating in our monthly Hackdays, cranking out a new product feature, supporting our two PagerDuty bands, or doing our day to day work, Dutonians live and breathe these five values every day. Together, we solve real customer issues and fulfill our mission of connecting teams to real-time opportunities and elevate work to the outcomes that matter.

Why We Need You

From the Fortune 100 to the smallest startups, technology companies rely on PagerDuty to help them understand the state of their infrastructure.  As the complexity and noise inside that infrastructure grows, companies are increasingly looking to PagerDuty to cut through their noise to find their important signals.

We are actively seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead teams of passionate engineers, where you will have the opportunity to shape and scale the culture as PagerDuty continues its growth. Your teams will own some of the most critical services within our Event Ingestion area of AIOps. You will be responsible for delivering innovative product features in partnership with our Product Managers, drive engineering enhancements like scaling our ingestion pipeline to serve the growing needs of our customers, performance tuning, and maintaining a high quality of service to name a few key responsibilities. Our Head of Engineering likes to call this key area as the team with the keys to the kingdom. Ingestion services need to work 24/7 with high availability and maintain SLOs of 99.99%. This is truly a rare opportunity to manage an area that will be a career defining period in your technology journey.

How You Contribute to Our Vision: Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit and retain the best talent for your team. Assist hiring for other teams as needed.
  • Partner closely with Product Management on creating the vision, roadmap for your team
  • Work with engineering, product, and UX stakeholders to facilitate project delivery.
  • Interact with internal engineering teams to resolve dependencies
  • Make pragmatic trade-off decisions on resourcing and priority
  • Inspire your team to deliver great products for our customers.
  • Work with the rest of engineering leadership at PagerDuty on cross-team initiatives, both cultural and technical.
  • You will be participating in your team’s on-call rotation, triaging and addressing production issues as they arise

Skills and Attributes

  • You are not a micromanager. You enable and empower a team to do great work beyond what you could accomplish on your own.
  • Experience helping your teams consistently ship value to customers. You go out of your way to make sure that you articulate that value within as well as outside of the team.
  • You have a sense of urgency towards action, customer-first philosophy and ability to think and act strategically.
  • Understand the balance between planning out work and just getting things done, between getting your hands dirty and getting out of the team’s way.
  • Experience hiring talented senior engineers and supporting them to do impactful work. You have also hired and developed junior engineers to realize their full potential.
  • Excellent ability to communicate in all directions of the org chart and understand the importance of laying out context for the team instead of prescribing solutions.
  • A genuine interest and willingness to learn PagerDuty’s culture and values and be a strong proponent for them.

Minimum Requirements

  • 8+ years of software development experience as an Individual Contributor and must have grown to a Senior or Staff Level engineer before transitioning to management
  • 3+ years of people management experience leading multiple technical teams, distributed across multiple geographies
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining healthy teams, with consistent shipping of product features.
  • Have a deep understanding of agile principles and how to apply them effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • You have worked on large-scale, distributed systems and know the pitfalls that can come with under or over-engineering.
  • You have worked with high-growth B2B SaaS companies building products on a public cloud.
