The Team You’ll Work With 

The Notifications team owns the engine that power users tasks across Carta products and the communication service to our users. Our team is responsible for building out the next generation of notification systems (email, SMS, push notifications) serving product teams internally, providing insights and configuration options for easy integrations. 

We’re a unique and passionate group of engineers, product managers, designers united by Carta’s mission to create more owners. The Problems You’ll Solve 

As an Engineering Manager on the Notification team, you’ll work on owning critical services that span across all Carta offerings. You'll help set the charter of the team and execute against that charter, all while guiding the career development of your direct reports. 

Here’s a few examples of the problems you’ll solve: 

  • Deliver results: Engineering managers create a culture of execution. You will help form the critical bridge between business, product, and engineering, and define metrics, processes, and practices to ensure the team is delivering meaningful impact to Carta. 
  • Collaborate across functions: Your team will be working with multiple functions such as product management, design, marketing, and customer success. Engineering managers are the glue that binds teams and engineers across Carta. 
  • Manage performance: Your team is a reflection of you, your values, and your support. Your team will need regular mentorship, advice and feedback to operate effectively. Contributing to this space along with your leadership team, is part of effective management at Carta. 
  • Establish best practices: Engineering managers are the last line of defense for quality control, best practices and effective design strategies. Helping your team, and peer teams, navigate these challenges is core to the problem space for managers. 
  • Drive accountability: Building more owners is as much of a Carta product problem, as it is part of a manager’s responsibilities. You will work with stakeholders to better understand the needs of the business, and with your team to create realistic expectations for success. 
  • Assess technical risk: Your experience will be a major factor in empowering your team to isolate, and reduce, technical risk. You will fill blind spots for your engineers, helping form the critical bridge between business, product, and engineering. 
  • Hire future Cartans: Carta has a great team today. We’re growing, and that means hiring. You will work with other engineering leaders to discover, interview, and recruit great team members and build them up into the next all star player.

About You 

You are a strong people manager with 4+ years of experience leading high performing engineering teams and 5+ years of experience as a full stack or backend engineer. You’re excited by the idea of developing scalable production quality systems and working on projects end-to-end. Our stack is React, Python, Django, gRPC, Docker, k8s. 

Here is who we’re looking for: 

  • You care deeply about software and the leverage that software brings. You can use your past experience building software to show your team what good looks like. You have a track record of delivering impact through high-quality software. You are a natural relationship builder across functions such as business, product, and engineering. 
  • You are energized by, and capable of, super-charging the careers of those that report to you. You’ve been able to help mentor more junior engineers, and support more senior engineers in reaching their potential. 
  • You’ve expanded the worldview of your teams, celebrated diversity of thought and background, and tied it all back through successful product launches in your past. You recognize the power of ownership, and have lived examples of where ownership played central roles in your career- through software and through business. You are willing and capable of getting in the trenches alongside your fellow engineers and reports. You lead by example, and take pride in your work. 
  • You are exceptionally technical. You can describe complex ideas simply. You are just as capable working toward a long term road map as you are jumping into a fire to solve a customer’s problem 5 minutes from now. 
  • You are hungry to learn about our customers and business.

The Interview Process 

Our team believes that interviews are a two-way process and we strive to make them enjoyable without any “gotchas.” The interview process starts with a call with a member of our recruiting team who will tell you more about the job and the company. Then, you’ll meet the hiring manager for the Data Products team, who will walk you through the specifics of the position, the team structure, what we’re looking for, and of course, answer any questions you will have. This interview will last 45 minutes. Then, we will set up a 45 minute engineering management discussion with one of our engineering managers focusing on your experience supporting engineering teams. Finally, we will schedule you for another four or five meetings with other team members to discuss everything from technical design to Carta’s culture to cross-team collaboration and what you can expect, and what is expected from you.
