Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

As a platform company powering businesses all over the world, Stripe processes payments, runs marketplaces, detects fraud, helps entrepreneurs start internet businesses from anywhere in the world, builds world-class developer-friendly APIs, and more.

The Accounts Infrastructure team is responsible for delivering the next generation of stripe’s backend. We own the accounts data; critical for all of Stripe’s business and product lines. We are ensuring Stripe runs on a Service-oriented architecture with best-in-class availability and latency. Our services are expected to scale to hundreds of thousands of requests per second.

As an engineer on our team, you will work with internal product teams and architects to build the next generation services that will ensure Stripe’s reliability, performance, and scale for the future.

What you’ll do

Responsibilities

  • Work with a team of talented engineers and architects to build a set of services that can deliver critical data to the majority of Stripe’s products
  • Design, build, and maintain core data models and internal APIs
  • Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
  • Work with engineers across the company to build new features at large-scale
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • 5+ years experience in backend engineering

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience building and operating backend distributed systems that maintain high availability and low latency with high throughput
  • Experience building software and systems that strike the right balance amongst simplicity, flexibility, and safety. We work mostly in Java. However, languages can be learned: we care much more about general engineering skill than knowledge of a particular language or framework.
  • A high bar, for themself and others, when working with production systems
  • Pride in working on projects to successful completion involving a wide variety of technologies and systems
  • The ability to thrive in a collaborative environment involving different stakeholders and subject matter experts
  • Enjoyment working with a diverse group of people with different areas of expertise (for example, ¼ of Stripes work in countries that are different from the ones they grew up in). Almost every role at Stripe collaborates with engineers, from Sales and Support in sharing feedback from our customers to Legal and Accounting in supporting our systems for tracking money movement and reporting around the world.
