About the team

The Payments Processing team owns all of Stripe’s most critical payment flows, with our platform processing hundreds of billions of dollars in card payments and locally preferred payment methods annually. Engineers on the team have the opportunity to expand the reach of Stripe’s global payments network, design and implement novel payment capabilities, and deliver best-in-class reliability and performance.

What you’ll do

As a Staff backend engineer in Payment Processing, you will build and expand APIs and services and work with our partners to launch new markets, payment methods, and capabilities. In this role, you’ll be making some of the most significant technical decisions for the company. You’ll collaborate with engineers across Stripe to build delightful features that span various parts of the system, as well as our business, sales and operations teams to understand and solve our users’ pain points.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, design, and maintain APIs services & systems by helping scope projects across many global teams at Stripe
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization such as experts in product, operations, and infrastructure
  • Work with engineers across the company to build new features at large scale, while improving internal engineering standards, tooling, and processes
  • Teach, mentor, and collaborate with engineers earlier in their technical careers to help them grow

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • Have experience designing and implementing large scale distributed systems, in both real-time and asynchronous transactional environments
  • Have served as the technical lead for large complex projects that span multiple teams and functions
  • Have worked in a variety of different platforms, in both high-level and low-level languages
  • Prefer simple solutions and designs over complex ones, and have a good intuition for what will scale and what will not
  • Are comfortable making choices and executing projects in dynamic and ambiguous environments, and deciding short vs long term system design tradeoffs 
  • Can break down and synthesize complex technical problems, and communicate tradeoffs effectively

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience helping grow a new team or product, including defining a great team environment
  • Experience with a major tech migration (e.g., splitting a monolith into services, migrating data between database technologies)
  • Experience in banking, payments, or financial services industries
  • Experience in front-end engineering
