Who we are

About Stripe

Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

At Stripe, Security Engineering’s mission is to safeguard our users’ data and maintain their trust. Whether we’re developing critical security infrastructure and automated detection capabilities, or building products focused on authentication and privacy transparency, we are committed to operating as a ‘World-Class’ Security Organization and keeping the safety and trust of our users at the forefront of everything we do.

What you’ll do

We’re hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a greenfield Security Software Engineering team in executing across critical initiatives including, but not limited to:

  • Building a dashboard that incorporates a variety of security related telemetry to present our security posture in such a way that enables Stripe product teams and stakeholders to make risk-based investment decisions
  • Evolving alert/remediation workflows using a product-oriented approach, enabling greater self-service across our user base and ultimately reducing developer friction across Stripe
  • Partnering with non-security organizations to move toward a consolidated operational dashboard for all of Stripe (ex. covering security, reliability, compliance)

In this role, you will...

  • Provide technical leadership on multiple fronts (architecture/design, code reviews, quality assurance and incident management) to your reports
  • Independently own and drive multiple work streams; this includes all planning and execution as well as managing the partnerships with other teams
  • Work closely with executive stakeholders, such as our CISO and CTO, in order to align on priorities and drive business critical initiatives forward
  • Establish and drive adoption of design and coding best practices within your team
  • Define, evangelize and drive Security Engineering best practices and improvements across org boundaries with setting clear measure of success
  • Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Stripe’s engineering management team
  • Manage and grow a team of engineers to deliver high business impact projects on schedule with high-quality
  • Partner with our recruiting team to attract, hire and retain top talent

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • 3+ years of formal engineering management experience
  • Track record of leading productive engineering teams
  • Hands-on software engineering experience as an IC prior to moving into management
  • Security domain knowledge

Preferred qualifications

  • You have a low ego and bring a high degree of empathy
  • You have a passion for building teams that include identities, backgrounds, and experiences that reflect those of our ideal user base
  • You encourage a healthy work environment that’s both supportive and challenging
  • You’re excited to help engineers develop new skills and advance in their careers
  • You understand what makes teams successful and what role a manager can play in that process
  • You’re clear and persuasive in writing and in person
  • You lead by example, by setting the right context, and by helping teammates do their best work
  • You know when to let a team work through problems and when to jump in to help

What’s it like to work at Stripe?

Stripe is, at its heart, an engineering company. To provide a missing pillar of core internet infrastructure, we hire people with a broad set of technical skills (and from a wide variety of backgrounds) who are ready to take on some of the most challenging problems in the industry – from reliably handling 100M API requests per day, to building adaptive machine learning as a result of years of data science and infrastructure work, and enabling entrepreneurs worldwide to start a global internet business.

We look at Stripe as a constant work in progress and the same is true of our people; for all of us, we believe the best is yet to come. We’re here to support each other in our curiosity and creativity – which we pursue through thoughtful discussion and knowledge-sharing among a diverse set of peers and colleagues.

We encourage all engineers to transition teams once every year and a half and also take on short-term projects with other teams across Stripe. This enables engineers to learn how different parts of Stripe work while also establishing stronger ties and cross-pollination between groups.

We contribute to existing open-source projects and the people working on them, and we release several tools as open-source.

We want to work in a company of warm, inclusive people who treat their colleagues exceptionally well. The kind of people who are committed to going out of their way to help other Stripes in the short-term and pushing them to improve over the long-term (by helping them to get better at what they do).

We’re a highly cross-functional organization and view that as part of the fun: we design our space to encourage as much collaboration as possible. We have long tables in the kitchen for a reason (to enable everyone to meet new people and learn from them). We also have a culture of transparency that we carry through to email communication, ensuring that Stripes all around the world have the information they need to make good local decisions.

In both our products and our people, we aim to reflect, represent and advocate for all of our users, globally. Our users transcend geography, culture and language; what we share, collectively, is a drive to create a fairer, more economically interconnected world.
