The GitLab DevOps platform empowers 100,000+ organizations to deliver software faster and more efficiently. We are one of the world’s largest all-remote companies with 1,600+ team members and values that guide a culture where people embrace the belief that everyone can contribute.

We're currently looking for a Senior Backend Engineer for our Source Code BE team. The Source Code BE team is focused on GitLab's suite of tools around Source Code Management. We interface with the Gitaly and Code Review teams, and work closely with the Source Code Frontend team

The Source Code team is focused on building and supporting all use-cases related to interacting with the code stored in each project repository. Whether it's a quick consultation of a commit or deep analysis of the history of changes to any given file, our team is tasked in building and supporting features that enable a great experience.

Source Code is one of the oldest and most complex parts of the GitLab application. We provide the interface layer, via Gitaly, to the Git repositories. A large portion of GitLab traffic, whether on gitlab.com or in private instances, is transported by Source Code endpoints, and we are focused on providing high reliability through performance tuning, SQL tuning, caching and rate limiting.

Upcoming feature work for the Source Code team includes FIPS compliance, protected branches, approval rules and CODEOWNERS.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and mitigate performance issues.
  • Help with maintaining GitLab technical Docs.
  • Ensure we deliver on our commitments to the market by communicating clearly with stakeholders.
  • Develop features and improvements to the GitLab product in a secure, well-tested, and performant way.
  • Collaborate with Product Management and other stakeholders within Engineering (Frontend, UX, etc.) to maintain a high bar for quality in a fast-paced, iterative environment.
  • Advocate for improvements to product quality, security, and performance.
  • Solve technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.
  • Craft code that meets our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices for a high-scale web environment. Maintain and advocate for these standards through code review.
  • Recognize impediments to our efficiency as a team ("technical debt"), propose and implement solutions.
  • Represent GitLab and its values in public communication around specific projects and community contributions.
  • Ship small features and improvements with minimal guidance and support from other team members. Collaborate with the team on larger projects.
  • Participate in Tier 2 or Tier 3 weekday and weekend and occasional night on-call rotations to assist troubleshooting product operations, security operations, and urgent engineering issues.

Requirements

  • Expert in developing with Ruby on Rails.
  • Passion and interest around performance tuning and Rails caching strategies for high-traffic endpoints.
  • Experience building highly available and performant business-critical product features.
  • Experience in writing automated tests using RSpec.
  • Professional experience with any other technologies that may be required by the specialty.
  • Ability to use GitLab.
  • Proficiency in the English language, both written and verbal, sufficient for success in a remote and largely asynchronous work environment.
  • Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and/or organizational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions.
  • Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems.
  • Comfort working in a highly agile, intensely iterative software development process.
  • Demonstrated ability to onboard and integrate with an organization long-term.
  • Positive and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Effective communication skills: Regularly achieve consensus with peers, and clear status updates.
  • An inclination towards communication, inclusion, and visibility.
  • Experience owning a project from concept to production, including proposal, discussion, and execution.
  • Self-motivated and self-managing, with excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with other parts of the organization.
  • Share our values, and work in accordance with those values.
  • Ability to thrive in a fully remote organization.

You'll stand out if you bring:

  • One or more merge requests against the GitLab codebase.
  • A deep understanding of Git internals.
  • Experience with Golang.

Also, we know it's tough, but please try to avoid the confidence gap. You don't have to match all the listed requirements exactly to be considered for this role.
