The GitLab DevOps platform empowers 100,000+ organizations to deliver software faster and more efficiently. We are one of the world’s largest all-remote companies with 1,600+ team members and values that guide a culture where people embrace the belief that everyone can contribute.

This Fullstack Engineering Manager role for our Monitor:Observability Group is 100% remote.

We are working on making a serious entrance into Observability, as we see this as a necessary component of a complete DevOps platform. This engineer will manage a team of 4-6 engineers primarily focused on visualization and dashboarding of observability data. The Engineering Manager will oversee development of GitLab Observablity UI as well as other aspects of monitoring feature development.

Where you can learn more about the team:

What'll do in this role

  • Manage and grow a team of Engineers in the Monitor: Observability group
  • Collaborate with the Product Manager to help inform planning and author project plans for epics, and influence the overall direction of the feature
  • Work with other team members (e.g. Product leadership, Software Engineering in Test) to ensure the team direction is clear and the team is delivering value aligned with business needs
  • Run agile project management processes. We work iteratively and release monthly.
  • Maintain empathy for the team by keeping awareness of engineering processes and practices. Examples might be: evaluating individual workflow during one on ones, conducting code reviews, or working on non-critical path bugs and/or features.
  • Actively seek and hire globally-distributed talent
  • Draft quarterly OKRs and Engineering KPIs

Experience we're looking for:

  • People management experience, leading an Engineering team (1:1's, salary conversations, etc)
  • Knowledge of observability tooling
  • An ability to operate within our view on leadership
  • Technical credibility: this team primarily works with Golang, ClickHouse, Prometheus, OpenTelemtry and Jaeger. While we don't require working knowledge or previous development experience in these areas, it's helpful to understand how SaaS applications are built.
  • Empathetic approach to people leadership
  • Exquisite brokering skills: you'll need to regularly achieve consensus amongst departments

It's useful if you have:

  • Experience bringing new products or features to market
  • Experience leading a remote, globally distributed team
