Our Story

Founded by early Twitter engineers, Aura is unique as a software company driving sustainable profit through sales of a hardware device.  Aura is already used by millions of families who love our product – customers consistently tell us how easy it is to share photos using our mobile apps from afar to loved ones' homes. Wirecutter calls us the best digital picture frame. We're constantly innovating to build the definitive product for sharing family photos.

We use Android both on our frames and in our play store app to deliver a seamless user experience across our software and hardware.  Leveraging the Android Open Source Project we make it easy for users to pre-configure their frames as a gift, get them set up on their Wi-Fi network leveraging Bluetooth LE, and curate, edit, and share photos and videos easily.

Your Role

As the lead Android engineer on our mobile team you will improve and expand our user experience across both our mobile and frame android apps used by millions of people. You will report directly to our CTO and collaborate closely on both new product development and enhancing our existing offering with our design, product, firmware, and API platform teams.  Our mobile app is the primary touch point for our product, with several users sharing photos for each frame.

We're especially interested in someone who takes a customer-focused engineering approach. We believe that our customers and their needs should be at the center of every technical decision, and are relentlessly focused on delivering the best possible product. We have a bias towards fast iteration and use data, both quantitative and qualitative, to drive all the decisions we make and measure success.  As a member of a small team, you'll be directly responsible not only for building but also for planning, collaborating, and communicating about the projects you own.

  • Be responsible for your own weekly tasks through self-organization, communication, and time management
  • Participate in daily standup meetings and others as necessary

We're Excited About You Because:

  • Have at least 5 years native Android experience on an app with at least 10k MAU
  • Ready to collaborate in person at our SF office several days a week with design, product, and our CEO
  • Comfortable in hybrid Kotlin and Java codebases
  • Have experience building world-class UI on the Android platform
  • Are comfortable working in a small team and taking ownership over various aspects of the app
  • Are focused on user experience and using metrics, research, and feedback to measure success
  • Take a detail-oriented approach to the user interface, including comfort digging into Figma design files
