It's an exciting time to join GitLab.

GitLab is looking for a Golang Backend Engineer for the Package Stage. This position is 100% remote.

Your expertise shapes our DevOps product

At GitLab, developers are independent and self-organized individual contributors who work together as a tight team in a remote and agile way. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll work on all aspects of GitLab, building features, fixing bugs, and shaping the future of the CI/CD tools.  This includes both the open source version of GitLab, the enterprise editions, and the GitLab.com service as well. Hundreds of thousands of developers depend on GitLab every day to get their jobs done.

Why joining the team

The Package group has a very unique setup that provides the opportunity to maintain core features of the product with newer and exciting areas. We focus on package management to be the single source of truth for storing and distributing dependencies for every GitLab customer. While we are a self-sufficient and autonomous team, we assume a cross-cutting role and regularly work with product teams across all of GitLab, which makes our work highly diverse and never boring.

What you’ll do

  • Contribute to the overall direction of the Package group
  • Play a key role in maturing and scale the Container Registry offering to ensure enterprise readiness and adoption.
  • Ship moderately sized features and improvements with minimal guidance and support from other team members. Collaborate with the team on larger projects.
  • Solve technical problems of high scope and complexity with boring solutions. Everyone is responsible for finding ways to simplify and improve the features we own.
  • Maintain and advocate for high standards through code review changes submitted by other engineers or community contributors
  • Grow your skills in Golang, PostgreSQL, and Git.
  • Provide mentorship for Junior and Intermediate Engineers on your team to help them grow in their technical responsibilities and remove blockers.
  • Engage in the trainee maintainer program at your own comfortable pace while striving to become a full-fledged project maintainer.

What you’ll need

  • Significant professional experience with Go.
  • Significant professional experience with HTTP APIs, Object storage, SQL databases and Git.
  • Some experience working with Containers.
  • Proficiency in the English language, both written and verbal, sufficient for success in a remote and largely asynchronous work environment.
  • Comfort working in a highly agile, intensely iterative software development process.
  • Effective communication skills: Regularly achieve consensus with peers and clear status updates.
  • An inclination towards our culture of communication, inclusion, and visibility.
  • Self-motivated and self-managing, with substantial organizational skills.
  • Share our values, and work following those values.

You'll stand out if you bring:

  • Demonstrated experience with monitoring and observability tools such Prometheus, Grafana and ELK.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with Kubernetes/Helm.
  • Experience in large production environments and in scaling SaaS products.
  • Experience with the GitLab product as a user or contributor.
  • Passionate about/experienced with open source and developer tools
  • Experience working remotely and thrive in a fully remote organization

We know it's tough, but please try to avoid the confidence gap. You don't have to match all the listed requirements exactly to be considered for this role.
